Back in July, during the first week of training camp, I spent a few minutes chatting with Denver running back Andre Hall about his life, his family and his background.
We spent a few minutes talking about his favorite tattoos, which include his mother’s name, Carol, which is inked across his back.
“That’s ‘cause my momma’s always been on my back. About everything.”
Hall said at the time. He meant that in the best way possible, crediting Carol Barthel for inspiring him to work hard throughout his football career, in high school in St. Petersburg,Fla., in community college and then finally at the University of South Florida.
Barthel passed away at a Florida hospital Monday. Hall learned of his mother’s death several hours before the Broncos were to play Oakland in the season-opener, and despite his grief, decided to play anyway.
Hall will remain in Denver the rest of this week and will play in Sunday’s home opener against San Diego. He will then fly to Florida to attend his mother’s funeral in St. Pete on Monday.
